Dramatically Transform Your Kitchen With Painted Kitchen Cabinets

Painted Kitchen Cabinets

Just as a fresh coat of paint can transform any room in your house, it can also add a new look to your older kitchen cabinets. Paint is a very inexpensive way to spruce up any type of kitchen cabinet that you may have. You can choose to paint kitchen cabinets with one shade, or you can use a two tone painting technique which will most certainly give your kitchen a very upscale, sophisticated look. If you are going to use two colors, such as one for the doors and one for the cabinets, then taking the doors off and painting them separately will save you a ton of time and head aches.

Solid wood cabinets and wood veneer are good surfaces that will accept the paint easily. Anytime you are going to go the painted kitchen cabinet rout, you’ll want to make sure that any of the previous finishes that are currently on the cabinets are sanded off. If they have a varethane clear coat finish, then you may need a power sander, using a very fine grit sandpaper like a 120 or higher. This is required because the paint will not stick if you fail to rough up the surface.

After your cabinets are smoothly sanded, you’ll need to use a good wood primer as a base coat. The primer will give the paint something to adhere to and it will also seal the wood so that your paint doesn’t just get sucked in to the wood, which it will without primer. After they have been primed, you can start your first coat of paint on your cabinets. You need to have a high quality brush and/or roller so that you don’t see and brush strokes. It will also save you a lot of time and headaches if you remove all the hinges and knobs before you begin.

If you have a melamine finish on your cabinets, you can still paint them but you’ll need to go out and buy a good melamine primer as well as melamine paint. If you try and use regular primer and paint you’ll realizes that it will not stick to the cabinets. Painted kitchen cabinets can give your kitchen an instant upgrade, all at a fraction of the price of buying new.
