Distressed Kitchen Cabinets

A Few Of The Main Styles Of Distressed Kitchen Cabinets

A very unique option when it comes to the design and décor of your kitchen cabinetry is the option of distressed kitchen cabinets; this doesn’t mean that the distressed wood is aged but it is made to look like it is old or aged.

The distressed style is meant for those individuals who want their new furniture to have a certain look that is similar to an antique piece of furniture with all the various finishes of country furniture and all the things that might influence that initial look throughout years of use.

One can either buy distressed cabinets directly or if you are more of a DIYer then you can distress your cabinets by yourself which is obviously the most economic option.

There are a couple of very popular options when it comes to distressing your cabinets and they are the crackle look, the rub-thru or the natural wood look.
Crackle distressed cabinets focus on having a cracked layer of pain on the surface with another coat of paint underneath it, the rub-thru option highlights the bottom layer of paint by creating artificial wear spots and peaked areas by using either sand paper or various concentrations of paint thinner. The natural wood look doesn’t require any type of distressing to be done to the furniture, instead the whole idea is to not apply any type of finish to the wood, instead just coating it in a transparent protective layer meant to keep its look unaltered by external factors.

A few other options when it comes to distressing your cabinets are those of emulating wormholes, fly specs, cow tails and chain dents. The wormholes will look like the cracks and holes that the larvae of woodworms might make and the fly specs are just sprinkle marks similar to fly specks. Chain dents or various dings are just small indentations that a cabinet might suffer through years of wear and tear and moving around. These techniques only require using some sand paper or drill holes in order to replicate the wormhole look or alternatively sharp objects such as keys or strands of metal chains that will create nice circular distress patterns.
One technique that is very popular when creating distressed kitchen cabinets is that of wearing out the corners usually by slightly sanding them to look a bit lighter than the rest of it.

With so many options available it is important to choose the right distressed look depending on the user’s taste as well as on the overall home décor and kitchen size. There are of course pieces of already distressed furniture out there but these are more or less produced on an assembly line with perfectly measured patterns and locations and to most enthusiasts of this look that is certainly not the point.
People who want and look for distressed kitchen cabinets want for a certain look of uniqueness that can be attained through the various methods we talked about earlier the fact that they are unique is as much part of the appeal as the distressed look by itself.
